Meet Clan Graham

Graham Ordinary Lodge and Meadery is a family and Veteran owned business. The Grahams purchased the property in 2013 and have been restoring it ever since. A colonial-era log cabin/farm homestead built in the Appalachian Mountains in the late 1790s, the cabin has a one room main floor with a half story living space above.  A separate building was constructed soon after to provide a kitchen and eating space. An addition was added post civil war to the opposite side of the cabin creating two rooms, one on the main floor and one above.

The property was purchased in the 1870’s by the Vaughn family from the Phillips and stayed in the family until 1968 when it was willed to a local orphanage in Lynchburg, VA. 23 acres of the original farm was purchased in the 1970s by the Schrocks. They ran a four room Bed and Breakfast called The Otter’s Den until 2010.

“Ordinary” is a Colonial term for a rest stop.  An Ordinary offered a room for the night, a stable for your horse and a warm meal.  The Appalachians still had wild places and travelers looked for safe, overnight resting places as they journeyed through the mountains.  Since the cabin dates back to the late 1700s, and as the Scots, Irish and Germans were known to settle along the ridges (and because we are of Scot / Irish heritage),  we wanted to abide with this “Ordinary” concept and be in keeping with the colonial period of our Nation’s history.

Our current accommodations include two King Suites and two designated campsites, suitable for tents, campers and RVs. Primitive camping is available upon request.

In the fall of 2022, we opened our Meadery and use what was probably the original external kitchen to the cabin as our Mead Hall. A Meadery is where mead is made and served. Mead is sometimes referred to as honey wine and is made by mixing honey with yeast and water. Other ingredients like fruits and spices can be added to create different taste profiles. Since mead is referred to in the ancient Indian Vedas, it is thought to be the oldest alcoholic beverage in human civilization.
